National Assembly Channel - the Canal de l'Assemblee nationale - is the parliamentary television service of Quebec, broadcasting the work of the province's 125 elected members from the Parliament Building in Quebec City. Launched on 3 October 1978, it made Quebec the first legislature in Canada to televise its debates live, and today its proceedings are also followed by viewers who watch TV online.
The service produces more than 2,000 hours of programming a year, captured and retransmitted without commentary: plenary sittings of the National Assembly, parliamentary committee hearings, press scrums and conferences held at the legislature.
Every sitting, unedited
When the Assembly sits, the channel carries the full question period and debates live; between sittings, committee work dominates - commissions examining bills, hearing citizens and grilling ministers. Institutional ceremonies, from the swearing-in of members to the oath-taking of the Conseil des ministres, receive special coverage, keeping live television tied to the parliamentary calendar.
Open parliament in French
The Assembly's website hosts the channel's page with a direct video player and an archive of past proceedings, while the YouTube channel publishes excerpts, so the live streaming signal of Quebec democracy is available far beyond the province's cable networks.
