Democracy unfiltered, gavel to gavel - that is the promise of C-SPAN, America's public affairs network. Created by the cable television industry as a nonprofit public service, it covers Capitol Hill, the White House and national politics, and viewers who want to watch TV online can open live coverage free on the network's website.C-SPAN - the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network - launched March 19, 1979, when founder Brian Lamb convinced the House of Representatives to let cameras show its floor proceedings live. The Senate followed on C-SPAN2 in 1986, and C-SPAN3 arrived in 2001 to carry hearings and history. Funded by the cable industry with no government money and no commercials, the network remains a unique institution in American media.
Washington Journal, Floor Votes and Book TV
The C-SPAN morning begins with Washington Journal, the daily call-in program where viewers question journalists and policymakers directly. When Congress is in session, the network carries floor debate and votes uninterrupted; between sessions, committee hearings and campaign events fill the schedule. Weekends belong to Book TV on C-SPAN2 and American History TV on C-SPAN3, and debate season - like the New Hampshire U.S. Senate Debate streamed on its channels - shows the network at its best. This is live television as a public trust.Free Coverage Online
The C-SPAN live streams play free on the network's live page, with a searchable video library of every aired program stretching back decades - no cable login needed. For citizens who want the unfiltered picture, this is the original.
