Grassroots TV is the community access voice of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado, one of the oldest continuously operating public access stations in the United States. Run by the nonprofit GrassRoots Community Network, it has handed the airwaves to local residents for decades, and viewers far beyond the mountains can watch TV online through its streaming outlet.

The station grew out of Aspen's freewheeling media experiments of the 1970s, when community video activists argued that cable systems owed the public channel space. That argument became a working television station that still trains residents to produce their own programs today.

Aspen's Own Airwaves

The schedule is an open door: town councils and county commissioners meet on air, local musicians record sessions in the studio, nonprofits pitch their causes, and visiting lecturers from the Aspen Institute and other institutions reach a wider audience. Live television here looks like the community itself - unscripted, opinionated and distinctly local.

Made by Neighbors, for Neighbors

Regular offerings include coverage of Aspen City Council and Pitkin County meetings, student productions from valley schools, and specials tied to events like the Aspen Ideas Festival and the winter sports season that defines the region. Members can reserve equipment, learn editing and see their finished work cablecast across the valley.

A Grassroots TV live stream carries the channel beyond cable Channel 12, so second-home owners, former residents and the simply curious can keep up with Aspen life from anywhere. Few stations anywhere show a town to itself this directly.
