La 1 is the flagship generalist television channel of Spain, operated by Television Espanola within the public corporation RTVE. On air since October 28, 1956 as the very first TV service in the country, it remains the natural home for viewers who watch live TV and expect news, drama and entertainment of national scale.

The channel began broadcasting as TVE from studios in Madrid and grew alongside Spanish television itself, later known as La Primera before adopting the La 1 name in 2007. Since 2010 it has carried no commercial advertising, funding its public-service mission through the state budget, and today it reaches virtually every household in Spain on digital terrestrial television as well as online television audiences abroad.

From Morning Magazine to Prime-Time Drama

The day opens with La Manana de La 1, a long-running magazine mixing interviews, cooking and social stories, followed by the flagship newscast Telediario in its midday and evening editions, which have set the national news agenda for generations. Afternoons belong to fiction: the period series La Promesa and the daily soap Amar es para siempre keep loyal audiences company, while evenings often bring cinema and special events.

Series and Shows That Defined the Channel

Few dramas are as loved as Cuentame como paso, the family saga that has traced modern Spanish history since 2001, and few contests draw bigger crowds than MasterChef Espana, where judges Pepe Rodriguez, Jordi Cruz and Samantha Vallejo-Nagera turn amateur cooks into television stars. Musical phenomena such as Operacion Triunfo also found their home here.

La 1 live streaming keeps that whole tradition within reach far beyond Spanish borders, so anyone can follow the newscasts, the dramas and the big Saturday night shows wherever they are. Tune in and let the country's oldest channel fill the evening.
