Alhurra Channel is an Arabic-language news and current affairs network broadcasting from Springfield, Virginia, to audiences across the Middle East and North Africa. Launched on February 14, 2004, it is operated by Middle East Broadcasting Networks and funded through the U.S. Agency for Global Media, known for fact-based reporting aimed at viewers who now increasingly watch TV online.

The driving force behind the launch was media executive Norman Pattiz, founder of Westwood One, who argued that Arab audiences deserved a wider range of perspectives on regional conflicts and American policy. Bureaus in Baghdad and Dubai and production centers in Beirut, Cairo and Rabat made the channel a fixture of live television coverage of revolutions, elections and wars. After U.S. funding was cut in 2025, the network ended satellite broadcasting and rebuilt itself as a digital-first newsroom.

News, Analysis and Investigative Depth

The editorial agenda pairs breaking news with interviews, political talk shows and documentary strands. Rolling coverage of events in Washington and the Arab world sits alongside investigative reports, with cultural and social features for younger, mobile audiences.

Programs That Earned Their Reputation

The three-hour morning magazine Al Youm once followed the day's agenda from studios in five capitals. The documentary series Street Pulse received a Special Jury Award at the CINE Golden Eagle Awards, and the investigative production Delusional Paradise took silver at the Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards. A 2019 report, The Power of Forgiveness, won a People's Voice Award as best documentary.

Today the network's journalism continues on its digital platforms, with updates, explainers and long-form features in Arabic. Alhurra Channel live streaming carries on through real-time coverage of major events, keeping a free flow of information within reach of anyone, anywhere.
