DR1 is the flagship channel of DR - Danmarks Radio - the Danish public broadcaster, transmitting from the DR Byen media city in Copenhagen. Denmark's oldest television service, it carries news, drama, sport and entertainment to the nation on air and to viewers who watch TV online.
Danish television began on 2 October 1951 with a broadcast from Statsradiofonien - the present DR - making Denmark one of Europe's early television nations. The channel took the name DR1 in 1996 when the second channel arrived, and in 2009 the broadcaster moved into DR Byen, the purpose-built media quarter on Orestad.
Denmark's living room
The evening is anchored by TV Avisen, the national newscast that has set the agenda since 1951. DR1's drama tradition is world famous - Borgen, The Killing and the co-production The Bridge carried Danish storytelling around the globe - while the annual Dansk Melodi Grand Prix chooses the country's Eurovision entry - Eurovision itself has been staged from Copenhagen three times - keeping live television a national gathering point.
Public service online
The dr.dk/drtv portal carries the DR1 live signal for viewers in Denmark, and the DR YouTube channel publishes news, drama trailers and show highlights daily, so the live streaming audience follows Danish public television from anywhere in the world.
