DR2 is the second channel of DR - Danmarks Radio - the Danish public broadcaster, transmitting from the DR Byen media city in Copenhagen. The in-depth, culture-minded sister of the flagship channel DR1, it is followed on air across Denmark in high definition and by viewers who watch TV online.
The channel launched on 30 August 1996, ending DR1's 45 years as the country's only public television service. From the start it was conceived as a channel with attitude - the home of public-service depth that the flagship had no room for - and it has kept that profile through every reshaping of Danish media, surviving reviews and budget cuts that periodically questioned its existence.
Depth and debate
The grid is built on documentaries, current-affairs magazines and the nightly Deadline news hour, with debate formats, political satire and award-winning international drama filling prime time. Music, arts and science programmes serve audiences the commercial channels ignore, from classical concerts to philosophy, keeping live television a space for reflection rather than noise.
The second channel online
The dr.dk/drtv portal carries the DR2 live signal for viewers in Denmark, and the DR YouTube channel publishes documentaries, interviews and show clips daily, so the live streaming audience follows the channel from anywhere in the world.
