RussiaWatch online live stream The First Educational TV Channel
The First Educational TV Channel - Pervy Obrazovatelny in Russian - is one of the oldest educational television projects in Russia. It began broadcasting on 27 December 1998 as SGU TV, the channel of the Moscow distance-education institution now known as the Modern University for the Humanities, and received its current name on 1 January 2011. Today its programmes are followed by viewers who watch TV online.
For more than two decades the channel aired around the clock as a federal educational network, broadcasting lectures and documentary cycles across Russia. In October 2020 the federal broadcasting licence era ended, and the project moved fully online: the official website keeps the programme archive, while new videos appear weekly on the channel's Rutube and YouTube pages.
Lectures instead of entertainment
The grid has always been built from university lecture courses and author's programmes: the school-oriented block Novaya Shkola helps pupils with the humanities, the philosophy and history magazine Oikumena discusses the ideas that shaped world culture, and the practical series Semeyny Doktor gives medical advice for families. Courses in law, economics, psychology and languages complete the live television heritage now available on demand.
The university that never closes
The channel's site hosts programme descriptions and a video archive going back to 2004, and the live streaming era audience finds fresh uploads on Rutube every week, so the project continues its educational mission without a traditional broadcast frequency.
